The kernels are encased in a very hard woody shell wrapped by a green-brown fibrous husk that splits open as the nut matures. Macadamia nuts are collected once they have fallen to the ground, in most origins mechanically. Macadamias are considered to be amongst the most exclusive
of all fancy nuts due to its creamy, delicate taste and delightful texture. Macadamias are widely used in the confectionery, bakery and ice cream industries and are an increasingly popular snack.
Macadamia nuts are thought to be one the healthiest nuts available. They are naturally low in carbohydrates and while high in fat, 80% of the fat they provide is monounsaturated. One study found macadamia nuts provide nutritional and dietary benefits equal to or better than olive oil and other tree nuts. Another study noted that not only do macadamias lower the level of “bad” cholesterol, they increase the levels of good cholesterol (also known as HDL-C). Macadamia nuts are also rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and antioxidant vitamin E.
Kenkko can supply macadamias in various sizes and grades.
