Brazil Nuts are the seeds of an enormous evergreen tree (Bertholletia Excelsa) that grows in an area split between Brazil, Bolivia and Peru in the western Amazonian rainforest. The Brazil nut tree only grows in the wild; all attempts to grow it outside of its natural habitat have so far failed. Its round fruits resemble large coconuts, woody shell of dark brown colour, and can weigh more than one and a half kilos. The outer shell contains between 8 and 24 nuts approximately, each of them containing their own hard shell. The arrangement of these nuts inside this outer shell is similar to that of the sections of an orange. These fruits are only collected once they are ripe and have fallen to the ground.

Brazil Nuts are widely consumed as a snack, eaten raw or roasted, and/or salted. They are also used as an ingredient in ice creams, chocolates and other products within the bakery and confectionary industry.

NV On a nutritional level, Brazil Nuts are the richest natural source of selenium, a powerful antioxidant. Brazil Nuts are a very good nutrient in general terms, while they have the highest fat content of all nuts, over half of these fats are monounsaturated. Brazil Nuts are also noted for their omega-3 fatty acid content, known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, they are a good source of protein, minerals (calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc), vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine), vitamin B3 (also known as niacin), antioxidant vitamin E.
